I suffered from acid reflux for decades. I was eating the standard American diet. I used several prescription medications over the years. The doctors never said anything about diet except to stay away from some acidic foods like tomatoes. I went mostly vegetarian and it improved a little but still had bad heart burn. Finally, in my mid 40s, I changed my diet to meat, cheese and water only. I have been doing it for over 600 days and no reflux symptoms at all. Problems completely gone. No medications, no chest pain, all gone. Also had a positive side effect of losing some extra pounds. Who would have thought?

They said my son had acid reflux, put him on Prevacid and he broke his femur walking across the yard. Then they wanted to put him on Zantac... we said no... took him off medication entirely and it turns out he didn't have acid reflux at all...

The MidWestern Doctor and I have both read the same sources over the years. Johnathan Wright was required reading during my postgraduate education. Gastroenterologists have tended to be ignorant of the ramifications of PPI use. Lowering gastric acid prevents or at least limits protein's disulfide bond cleavage in the stomach. This prevents the "unfolding" of the protein for presentation in the duodenum for protease enzymes to continue breaking the amino acid sequence down. If not broken down, large clumps of peptides and protein fragments can cross into the blood stream, especially in the leaky guts of modern humans who lack the protection of proper microbiota. These large "clumps" often 10,000 Daltons in size, trigger immune systems response, and can induce sensitivities at best, and true IgE mediated allergy at worst.

Further degradation can occur with this repeated onslaught, including arthritic inflammation, and degraded cancer surveillance.

In addition to the good doctor's recommendation, you can alleviate the symptoms of an incompetent LES by: 1.) sleep with the entire head of the bed elevated 4 inches. Not just the thorax raised, but the entire bed angled. 2.) Chew a tablet or two of Deglycyrrhizinated licorice 15 minutes before meals. It boosts the mucin production in the stomach, to provide more protection for the stomach and lower esophagus. (Deglycyrrhizinated licorice has been prepared to make chronic use of licorice safe. When un-deglycyrrhizinated, licorice can raise blood pressure, cause potassium to drop, and throw women into preterm labor.)
