Interesting. The treatment of prostitution in my native country of Holland. With a traditional tendency towards a very strict culture of protestant churchianity, it used to be treated as undesirable, but necessary, not approved, but tolerated, since the 14th century. There were periods when it was forbidden, but enforcement was murky. More often having the statute against it would be useful if you wanted to prosecute certain criminals. Then in the eighteenth century they start to forbid it, but then in the beginning of the 19th century under French occupation (Napoleon) regulation became the name of the game. He wanted to provide for his soldiers. Then it is criminalized again, but very often not enforced, unless the statute is a useful excuse in pursuit of criminals. And it keeps flipping back and forth. Hilarious history. Of course, on the farm there was a strong belief in no sex before marriage, but the oldest son better not get married before his bride was pregnant - after all the survival of the family farm was at stake.
"undesirable, but necessary, not approved, but tolerated" that is kinda my philosophy.. Thanks for the value add... especially the info on the oldest son not getting married before his bride was pregnant! Very interesting!

Typical Dutch compromise with practicality. Lately they're going crazy thought, just like the wholerest of the world.
