I will NOT purchase overpriced books in the activist sphere. Alibris has it for $58 plus $5 S&H; AbeBooks.com is a buck more. This is ridiculous for a paperback. [I refuse to use Amazon for anything.]
Even Children's Health Defense has figured this out. The best price for wide distribution - and to reach the army of folks out there who can afford an extra $20 something every now and then - is $10 - $15 each plus shipping. Is it the publishers who are this out of touch, or in the pocket of a special interest that wants the book's introduction to be sabotaged? I've read a couple of accounts of this happening to authors who are inexperienced. Publishing delays, to miss events and peak periods, etc.
Just because people don't have a lot of money, doesn't mean they won't take action if they have the opportunity. But pricing the information out of their reach is condescending. Sorry for the rant, but I've been fighting this issue for over 30 years.
I agree with you. I closed my Amazon account the day after they took down WikiLeaks and I wish most others did the same. That shows we will not be jerked around. But of course most didn't and so we keep getting "jerked around". Kudos to you for bringing this up. You are spot on when you say it puts it out of reach of people who cannot afford it. And this essentially is a sort of censorship and favoritism where only the ones who already are living pretty well can have this crucial information.
